Springboard Nonprofit Consumer Credit Management believes it is never too early to begin to teach children about responsible money management and saving. As part of their ongoing financial education programs Springboard took the message of financial literacy to local elementary, middle and high school students to participate through the nationwide BE MONEY WI$E youth poster contest. Local winners were recognized at Springboard’s recent annual board meeting.

The theme of the contest was “Financial Responsibility Begins with Me”. Posters were judged on expression of theme, artwork style, content and creativity, and Springboard received over 85 entries from students in Riverside and San Bernardino Counties. The panel of judges included representatives from Bank of America, Alternatives to Domestic Violence and Community Action Partnership of Riverside County. Winners were selected from three grade-specific categories: grades three through five, six through eight, and nine through twelve. The Springboard winners were Kamryn Waller 3rd grade, Isabel Meraz 8th grade and Deshanea Smith 9th grade.

“The contest was a great opportunity to promote the importance of wise money management to young students,” said Dee Ann Chandler, education director for Springboard. “Many of the entries we received reflected both a commitment to savings and how to manage money effectively. We appreciate the support of teachers and parents for the contest and financial education.”

Local winners received a $100 savings bond, a trophy, and a certificate; all participants received a ribbon. Springboard’s local winners were submitted to compete in the national contest, to be judged against other entries from across the United States. The overall national winner will receive a $500 savings bond and an all-expense paid trip with their parent/guardian to Washington, D.C. to receive their award.

Springboard supports financial literacy year-round by offering free public workshops dealing with topics such as budgeting, money management and the wise use of credit. Springboard staff is also available to speak to local students and parents on these and related subjects. Springboard offers free confidential counseling and education to consumers nationwide.
