Common questions

Debt Management FAQs

Clear answers about how our Debt Management Program works.
What Is a Debt Management Program (DMP)?

A DMP is a structured plan that lowers interest rates and combines bills into one monthly payment, no new loan required.

Will a DMP Affect My Credit Score?

A DMP itself doesn't directly impact your score, but creditors may report reduced payments. Over time, repaying debt in full can improve your credit health overall.

Can I Include Only Certain Debts in My DMP?

No. All eligible unsecured debts must be included and treated equally to ensure fair repayment terms and full creditor participation in the program.

Can I Keep Credit Cards While on the DMP?

No. All credit lines must be closed. Rare exceptions may apply for one business card. After completing your plan, creditors often welcome you back.

How Long Does a Debt Management Plan Take?

Most Debt Management Plans take 3 to 5 years to complete, depending on your total unsecured debt and your monthly budget. Your certified counselor will map out a realistic timeline and set monthly payment goals so you always know exactly where you stand.

What Does a Debt Management Program Cost?

There is no charge for your debt management counseling session, it is completely free. If you enroll in a DMP, any administrative fees are typically kept low or waived, and your first monthly payment goes directly to your creditors within the first month.
